This was an extremely rewarding and challenging project to work on. For all the parties involved in making this book happen, this was truly a work of love. The biggest production challenge was for the images reproduced on the book to have total colour accuracy to the immensely beautiful daguerrotypes with their subtle tone variation and intense blacks. We achieved this by printing the images with four process colours and an extra Pantone black to improve depth. The different finishes on the cover with the spot varnished pages gave the book a great tactile quality to it.
Over fifteen years, the acclaimed photographer Jerry Spagnoli visited Amy’s gardens to preserve these cherished varieties in another way—with the historical daguerreotype process, producing ethereal images with a silvery, luminous depth and a timeless beauty, underscoring the historical continuity and value of knobby gourds, carrots pulled from the soil, and fruit picked fresh from the tree.
